Medford! When the news of the Ohio
flood
catastrophe was first received, the Red Cross fixed Medford's quota at
$480. With later news of the disaster, the amount was placed at $960.
But before the flood waters began to recede, the Jackson County
metropolis was asked to contribute $2400, or five times the original
quota. And Medford not only raised the $2400 but, from voluntary
subscriptions, the total has grown to $3600, and at late accounts
contributions were still flooding in.And the sum was raised out of the goodness of heart of the people of genial old Jackson County. There was no drive, no special publicity, no personal solicitation. It was entirely and exclusively a free-will offering, according to the Mail Tribune. It was a response that was immediate, generous and heartening. When the city of Bandon was obliterated by flames, Medford was one of the first and one of the most generous in going to the rescue. One feature in the service was a voluntary Christmas offering made by the Medford Rotary Club to the children of the luckless city by the sea.
